Alpha-GPC: Choline Supply — and a Safety Signal Worth Knowing
Alpha-GPC supplies choline, the raw material for acetylcholine. It’s prescribed for cognitive decline in some countries — and a large 2021 study linked it with a higher risk of stroke. Here’s the balanced picture for adults over 50.*

What It Is
Alpha-GPC is a natural compound that delivers choline, an essential nutrient used to build cell membranes and acetylcholine. It’s about 40% choline by weight. In some countries it’s a prescription medicine for cognitive decline.
How Much Choline You Need
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets an Adequate Intake of 550 mg a day for adult men and 425 mg for women, with an upper limit of 3,500 mg a day. Eggs, fish, meat, dairy and beans are good food sources.
What Studies Show
Most Alpha-GPC trials involved people with Alzheimer’s disease or vascular dementia, often at 1,200 mg a day, and several reported improvements on cognitive scales. Research in healthy older adults is sparse. ODS notes that the evidence for choline and cognition overall is mixed; a 2015 systematic review found no clear improvements in healthy adults.
The 2021 Stroke Study
Researchers analyzed South Korean national health records for more than 12 million adults aged 50 and over, published in JAMA Network Open in 2021. People prescribed Alpha-GPC had a higher risk of stroke over ten years than matched non-users (adjusted hazard ratio 1.43 after matching). The authors cautioned that this is an association: users were older and had more health conditions, and the mechanism is unclear, though one theory involves TMAO, a compound produced when gut bacteria break down choline.
What It Means After 50
For most healthy adults the absolute risk from a modest amount in a multi-ingredient capsule is unknown and probably small. But if you’ve had a stroke or TIA, or have strong risk factors such as atrial fibrillation or uncontrolled blood pressure, this is a reason to talk to your doctor before taking Neuro Sharp.
Studied Amounts
Dementia trials commonly used 1,200 mg a day; nootropic products often contain 150–600 mg.
Side Effects and Interactions
Reported side effects include headache, heartburn, dizziness and insomnia. Alpha-GPC may add to medicines that increase acetylcholine and oppose anticholinergic medicines. Its effect combines with Huperzine-A in Neuro Sharp, so avoid extra choline or Huperzine-A products.
Bottom Line
An efficient choline source with some evidence in dementia, little in healthy adults, and a safety signal that people with cardiovascular history should discuss.*
